Holy hell. Seventh Rule has been a label for 8 years now. We are not sure how this happened but we are glad to still be here in what appears to be the remains of a music industry. Many thanks go to all the bands, magazines, other labels, promoters, and most importantly the people who actually like what we do.

To mark this 8 year occasion we are having a anniversary sale on all our releases in the CD format. All CDs bought through the Seventh Rule online store will be $8 postage paid domestically, a couple dollars more to ship them international. This sale will continue until the middle of January.

This also marks the end of year one of our escape from Chicago, IL to Portland, OR. We miss our friends in the Midwest, but if y'all miss us too... come visit. There's a Motel 6 close by that is quite affordable.

2012 has us building up to be our busiest year yet. The early part of the year will have us releasing the long awaited CD reissue of INDIAN's "The Unquiet Sky", a letter-press CD version of ATRIARCH's "Forever the End" (Printed by Stumptown Printers) and a blue vinyl version of the BATILLUS "FURNACE" release. Make sure to keep your eyes out also for new releases from the likes of Wizard Rifle, Author & Punisher, and Stoneburner. You won't be disappointed.

Since Seventh Rule started, our goal has always been to release heavy music. Sometimes it gets quiet, sometimes it gets noisy, but it always stays heavy. Our vision has also been to put every one of our releases into the vinyl format. The Chicago Reader has called our releases, "punishing music in beautiful packages." We still agree. So don't let anyone tell you that vinyl or the compact disc is an obsolete format. We will continue to release music in a physical format, no matter what. We don't want our efforts to be lost and truly not forgotten. Perhaps the near future will hold digital media as the most predominant transport medium for music. We can accept that. But when all your hard drives crash, and the servers in the clouds go corrupt, we believe the people holding the Vinyl and CDs will truly be in charge.

The two-man wrecking crew known collectively as WIZARD RIFLE first came together in the autumn of 2009. Based in Portland, OR and drawing influences from Black Sabbath, Lightning Bolt, High on Fire, Karp, Sleep, Sonic Youth, Nomeansno, The Stooges, and Danava, WIZARD RIFLE are as difficult to describe as they are to ignore. Eclectic, innovative, and all-around out there, their sound is a constantly-evolving, always-adapting entity that changes with their moods. Chicago grinders HARPOON entered Bricktop Recording in June of this year to record their sophomore record, Deception Among Birds. Andy Nelson, who recorded the band's first first full-length, Double Gnarly /Triple Suicide (released on Interloper), was brought back to handle engineering duties.

Deception Among Birds will be released on October 25th on Seventh Rule.

It's 2011 and HARPOON still refuse to sell out and get some fallable human to compliment their trusty drum machine. Their personnel is minimal...The riffs are maximum.

HARPOON will enter Bricktop Recording in the month of June to record their sophomore record "Deception Among Birds." Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Millions, Black September) will once again be handling the engineering duties after recording the band's first first full-length "Double Gnarly /Triple Suicide" (Released on Interloper).

The guitar performance within HARPOON is delivered with a fluidity not often heard from bands associated with the terms "grind" or "powerviolence". Make no mistake - there's nothing 'soft' about this pile driving onslaught - you can simply sense the ease of execution in Dean Costello's playing. He isn't new to this. In addition to Costello, HARPOON singer Toney Vast-Binder has been reunited with bass player D.J. Barraca (Lair of the Minotaur). There's enough metal pedigree here to pique the interest of even the most skeptical metal maven (7000 Dying Rats, Lair Of The Minotaur, Gun Kata, and on and on). "Deception Among Birds" veers slightly from the premise of the first full-length ("Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide" released on Interloper) in that it takes some time to stop and smell the corpses. There are exercises in dronery that re-oxygenate the listener just enough to spear them with another sharpened assault from the part-man, part-machine, all-shredding HARPOON.

"Deception Among Birds" is slated for release through Seventh Rule for the month of September on analog and digital formats. Tour dates will be announced soon, including a proper set of West Coast shows leading up to the release.

"In what seemed like a genius idea, we booked studio time before we left for Europe. The idea being that we had new songs and after playing them every night for a month straight, what better time to record? We enlisted the engineering skills of Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording. He had recorded the Harpoon and Weekend Nachos full lengths and those sounded stellar. Andy also does guitar / pick slides in Weekend Nachos, and their shows are worth a night leaving your couch.

We loaded into the studio and got situated in a room that could fit us all. The idea was to set up in the same room, mic us all up, and get an energetic live recording. Vocals would be tracked separately and of course the guitar feedback overdubs would be done later.

We walked out of there with four originals and a cover of Nirvana's "Tourette's". The new material is MILLIONS moving in a forward direction for sure. Or perhaps we are moving sideways."

Originally released in 2005, and with the CD out of print and the vinyl only available here, its only fitting that we make INDIAN's debut 'The Unquiet Sky' available through BANDCAMP for your enjoyment.

'The Unquiet Sky' was the 5th release Seventh Rule put out and it still holds as one of our favorites. During the Mastering process, a call was made to Alan Douches to discuss how loud we wanted this record pushed. We told him we wanted it to sit as one of the loudest records in people's record collections. He had recently finished Converge's 'Jane Doe' and Jake Bannon had told him something similar, so he gave 'The Unquiet Sky' the same treatment. While we feel the two albums sound nothing alike, both of the albums are loud as hell and will push your speakers to extremities. Enjoy.

The album, which was recorded at Semaphore Recording with engineer Sanford Parker (Yob, Unearthly Trance, Nachtmystium, Pelican) and mastered by Collin Jordan (Ministry, Ohgr / Skinny Puppy) at the Boiler Room, will be released on April 19th in North America, with the LP version available for Record Store Day.

I always say that the The Scar Is Our Watermark is one of my favorite Seventh Rule releases, mostly due to the DVD documentary that Sean Hoen created to go along with this release. The time is now and Seventh Rule has started a BANDCAMP page and will eventually offer all our releases through it for digital streaming and downloads.While we are not going to sit here and predict the future, we are constantly making decisions on how we want to handle our presence in the digital world. In reality, the digital market has always existed as a name-your-price model, but there have always been just two prices: free, or whatever iTunes is charging. What we like about BANDCAMP is the price flexibility and the ability to support a release with whatever you want to contribute. The first 200 downloads of every release will be free. Please check here for the downloads before supporting mediafire-mega-space downloads. We are helping to cut out the middleman and albums you download directly from Seventh Rule, via BANDCAMP, will be of a much higher quality. After the free downloads have been used, the release will go up to a "Choose Your Price" scale. If you haven't noticed, we have been building up our roster. We are picky as all hell when it comes to deciding who to work with. Some years our inspiration is scarce, but 2011 does not seem to be shaping out that way!

And now for the official press release...

Seventh Rule proudly welcomes Brooklyn doom quartet Batillus to its stormy roster.

With songs that move from bristling blast beats to subterranean crawls, Batillus (buh-TILL-us) cohere the extremes of heavy music into a surge of massive riffing, rolling over and descending on the listener with the force and intensity of a sudden storm.

The New Yorker describes Batillus as "a sludgy four-piece that slows monstrous Black Sabbath riffs to a crawl to produce highly textured compositions of droning doom-metal," and Revolver calls their music "beyond-atmospheric blackened doom."

Seventh Rule will release "Furnace," the first full length by Batillus, in the coming spring months, with full U.S. touring by the band to follow. "Furnace" was recorded by Sanford Parker (Yob, Unearthly Trance, Nachtmystium, Pelican) at Semaphore Studios in Chicago.

Seventh Rule Recordings proudly welcomes The Swan King to its eccentric family.

Formed in 2009 by Guitarist / Vocalist Dallas Thomas (ex-Asschapel), Bassist Jamie Drier (ex-Planes Mistaken For Stars) and Chicago native Zafar Musharraf on Drums. When the band began, the trio started writing songs in the Robert Fripp Guitar Craft tuning to help them break out of the old rock comfort zone. They have often been compared to the songwriting of the Wipers mixed with the noisyness of bands on the Amphetamine Reptile label.The Swan King's debut release, "Eyes Like Knives" was recorded with Sanford Parker and is due out this spring on Seventh Rule.

Seventh Rule Recordings proudly welcomes Diesto to their roster. Hailing from the rain and gloom of Portland, Oregon, Guitarist Chris Dunn describes the band as “a combination of noise rock and sedate doom, laden with hooks and melody.” The follow-up album to their critically acclaimed “Isle Of Marauder” release, Seventh Rule will release “High As The Sun” on November 1st.

"High As The Sun" was recorded by Adam Pike (Red Fang, Black Elk) in Portland, OR and mixed by Alex Newport (Fudge Tunnel, The Mars Volta) in Brooklyn. Diesto will spend the rest of the year playing shows along the west coast. A full U.S. tour is being planned for early 2011.
